Toyota to Add Apple Car Keys Support
Toyota is preparing to integrate support for Apple iPhone and Apple Watch Car Keys, a feature activated on Apple’s servers as of today, December 15, 2025. This will allow Toyota vehicle owners to unlock, start, and potentially share digital car keys through the Wallet app.
Introduced in 2022, Car Keys stores a digital version of a car key securely within the Apple wallet. Unlocking a compatible vehicle is achieved by holding an iPhone or Apple Watch near the vehicle’s Near Field Interaction (NFC) reader.
How Apple Car Keys Works
The unlocking process is streamlined; simply tapping the door handle can initiate it. Apple provides both Face ID authentication for security and an “Express Mode” that bypasses authentication for quicker access.
Toyota Timeline and Wider Adoption
While toyota has not yet announced a specific rollout date, the activation on Apple’s back end suggests support will become available relatively soon. At WWDC 2025, Apple announced that 13 additional vehicle brands would soon support digital car keys, including Audi, Acura, Porsche, GMC, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Rivian, Smart, Lucid Motors, Tata Motors, Hongqi, WEY, Chery, and Voyah.
This expands upon the existing support offered by BMW, Genesis, Kia, Hyundai, lotus, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. A extensive, regularly updated list of compatible vehicles is maintained by MacRumors.
Benefits of Apple Car Keys
Apple Car Keys offers several advantages over traditional car keys, including enhanced security through encryption and the ability to share keys digitally with trusted individuals. The convenience of using an iPhone or Apple Watch eliminates the need to carry physical keys, and the Express Mode provides a seamless unlocking experience.
