The search was initiated after a witness reported seeing a shark breach the water with​ what appeared to be a human body in its mouth, according to authorities.

Reported Shark Sighting

The initial report came from a member​ of the swimming ⁤group, who claimed to have witnessed the shark breach the surface. “The person who reported the shark sighting⁤ claimed‌ they saw a shark breach the water with what‍ appeared to be a ⁢human body in ⁢its mouth,” Monterey County Sheriff’s Office⁢ spokesperson,deputy Anderson,told SFGate. the shark then submerged and did not⁤ resurface.

While authorities have confirmed reports of a shark sighting in​ the area, Deputy ⁣Anderson emphasized that there is currently no definitive evidence to confirm the missing‍ swimmer was attacked by a shark. SFGate reported this clarification.

Search Efforts

Multiple agencies are involved in the search, including the Pacific Grove Police Department, Monterey ⁤County Fire Department, U.S.‌ Coast guard, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, and California state Parks. The U.S.⁣ Coast Guard deployed a⁢ helicopter from Air Station San Francisco and a small boat from its Monterey station to aid in the‍ search on Monday, according‍ to ⁣U.S. ‍Coast Guard spokesperson Chris Sappey.

The Pacific Grove Police Department is directing all inquiries to the ​U.S. Coast Guard. ​ The family​ of the missing swimmer has been notified of the situation.
