The great food culture is not what many commuters celebrate: A sandwich and a drink from the train station shop, hastily consumed on the train, frequently enough has to suffice.This trend towards quick take-away food is also reflected in the range of services offered at train stations. In those of SBB, there were almost 240 convenience stores in 2024 – almost 100 more than in 2018. The number of smaller kiosks, on the other hand, has decreased.
In the past, Valora with its Avec stores dominated the business and won a major SBB tender in 2019 for the operation of 116 kiosk and 146 convenience areas until 2030. but the competition is increasing.Now, SBB has even joined forces with Valora competitor Migros for a test.
In the train stations of Zurich HB, Bern, Birmensdorf ZH and Islikon TG, shops of the Mio format will be opened. These are a smaller version of the Migrolino shops.The branch in Zurich started operations on December 4th, and the others are expected to follow soon. As last year, there has also been a Mio shop at Baden AG station. However, the landlord there is not SBB, but the city.
Swiss Federal Railways Expand Retail Options with Mio and Migrolino

This move comes as SBB seeks to enhance passenger experiance and expand access to everyday goods.
Mio and Migrolino: A Growing Presence
Mio by Migros shops typically open on spaces up to approximately 80 square meters, while Migrolino locations are generally larger. Mio shops are usually open from 6 or 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, aiming to allow commuters to complete thier shopping in under a minute. Mio shops are already appearing at existing gas stations.
Coop is also a meaningful player in the convenience store sector, operating 333 Coop Pronto locations, many of which are situated at train stations, according to the company’s website. Valora, a major competitor, also maintains a ample presence.
