Darrell Standing, a former agronomy professor, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a colleague. He then spent five years in darkness, in solitary confinement, often in a straitjacket. Yet, even in these conditions, Standing achieved a freedom few others have known. As the most strictly isolated prisoner, he traveled not only the world, but also through time.
