Research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, led by Dr. John Borniger, are focusing on understanding how tumors disrupt the body’s natural rhythms, rather than directly targeting the cancer cells themselves. Their approach centers on optimizing the patient’s overall physiological health to bolster the body’s natural defenses against cancer.
Dr. Borniger’s team found that simply restoring normal circadian rhythms in mice with cancer slowed tumor growth without the use of traditional anti-cancer drugs. This suggests that a healthy circadian rhythm can, in itself, be a powerful anti-cancer mechanism.
“What’s really cool is that we didn’t treat the mice with anti-cancer drugs,” Borniger stated in a UT Southwestern news release. “we’re focused on making sure the patient is physiologically as healthy as possible. That itself fights the cancer.”

The research suggests that optimizing circadian rhythms could enhance the effectiveness of existing cancer treatments and reduce their toxicity. Many chemotherapy drugs are most effective when administered at specific times of day, aligning with the body’s natural rhythms.
