Denmark Seeks NATO Force in Greenland with Norway Support

Denmark Proposes NATO Force for Greenland and the ‌Arctic

At a meeting in Brussels on Monday, Denmark’s Defense Minister ‌Troels Lund Poulsen⁤ and Greenland’s⁢ Foreign ​Minister ​Vivian Motzfeldt formally proposed the⁢ establishment of ⁢a ⁤North atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)‌ force in Greenland and the Arctic region.NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has acknowledged the proposal, according to Minister Poulsen.

The proposed force would function as a guard force, similar to NATO⁣ deployments already in place in ‍the Baltic states. ⁤ denmark is actively seeking Norway’s⁣ participation in ‍this ​potential Arctic security initiative.

When questioned by Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Poulsen stated that Norway’s inclusion ⁢in the guard force would be a natural fit. ⁢ However, ​Norway’s Defense Minister, Tore O. Sandvik, indicated that ‌the proposal is one of several currently under consideration within the NATO framework.

“It is ​not a ⁤bad⁣ idea, but we will see ​what we agree on within the framework of NATO,” ​Sandvik told NRK.
