Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) confirmed on January 22, 2026, that a package to upgrade its fleet of F-16V Fighting Falcon fighter jets is proceeding as planned. The upgrade, involving approximately 140 aircraft, aims to enhance Taiwan’s air defense capabilities amid increasing regional tensions. The project includes radar upgrades, new avionics, and improved weapons systems integration.
F-16V upgrade Details
The F-16V upgrade program is a significant investment in Taiwan’s air force modernization. The upgrade focuses on enhancing the F-16A/B fleet to the F-16V configuration, bringing them to a comparable level of capability as newer F-16C/D models. Key improvements include the addition of the Advanced Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, a new mission computer, and a modernized cockpit display.
According to a press release from the MND, the upgrade will substantially improve the F-16V’s ability to detect, track, and engage targets in a complex electromagnetic environment. Ministry of National Defense, R.O.C.
Regional Security Context
The F-16V upgrade is occurring against a backdrop of heightened military activity in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly concerning China’s increasing assertiveness towards Taiwan. China views Taiwan as a renegade province and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification. The upgrade is intended to bolster Taiwan’s ability to deter potential aggression and defend its airspace.
