Coco Gauff Suffers Shock Loss, Displays Rare Outburst
coco Gauff experienced a stunning defeat at the Australian Open, losing 6-1, 6-2 to her Ukrainian opponent in under an hour. The 21-year-old American committed 26 unforced errors in a performance described as “shocking” by former British tennis player Tim Henman, especially considering her recent Grand Slam successes - winning both the French Open and US Open, and currently ranked third in the world.
Following the match,Gauff retreated to a secluded area behind the stands and was seen forcefully hitting her racket against the ground,a display of frustration ofen reserved for the court itself.
“I was trying to go somewhere where they couldn’t film me, but apparently they did,” Gauff saeid, expressing her discomfort with the lack of privacy during the tournament. “We only really have it in the locker room.”
While other players may not be bothered by public displays of emotion, Gauff indicated she feels differently. She also considered the impact on her support team.
“I know myself, and I didn’t want to be mean to my team. They’re really good people and they don’t deserve that,” Gauff explained, acknowledging her emotional nature and need to release frustration. “It only lasted a minute. I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I was trying not to do it on court in front of kids or anything,but I just had to get the emotion out.”
Henman, drawing from his own experience, commented, “When you have a bad day, you need to get it out.”
