NGEN Expands to Latvia with €50M Battery Project Investment

Slovenian Energy Company NGEN Group Invests €50 Million in Latvian Battery Storage Project

Riga, Latvia – – Slovenia-based energy company NGEN Group has announced a significant investment in Latvia’s energy infrastructure, committing €50 million to the development of a 100 MW / 200 MWh battery energy storage project. The announcement was made at a media event hosted by the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia.

The investment was finalized through the acquisition of 100% ownership of SIA “Liepāja ESS,” a Latvian energy company. The project, located in Grobiņa parish, Dienvidkurzeme region, at the Grobiņa substation, will be the first stand-alone grid-connected battery energy storage project in Latvia, and the first in the Baltic states to utilize Tesla technologies. Construction is slated for completion this year, according to announcements made today, .

Latvian Minister of Economics Viktors Valainis emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “The development of such projects is a significant step in the development of Latvia’s energy infrastructure. This is proof to international investors that Latvia is a safe country for investments and can implement significant energy projects based on open and predictable procedures.”

The project is designed to enhance the Latvian energy system’s balancing capabilities, reliability, and flexibility. This is particularly crucial following Latvia’s disconnection from the BRELL network in 2025. The planned solution will be directly connected to the transmission system operator “Augstsprieguma tīkls.”

NGEN Group CEO Roman Bernard highlighted Latvia’s appeal as an investment location, stating, “Latvia is an attractive market for the development of such solutions, thanks to orderly regulation and strong ambitions in the energy sector.” He further noted that the acquisition of Liepāja ESS represents a logical step in the company’s European expansion, demonstrating the value of energy storage in strengthening system security and market efficiency.

The project’s supply chains will rely on NATO countries and their allies, with key equipment being sourced from the USA, underscoring a focus on resilience and security. According to NGEN, the project is designed to be built using supply chains from NATO countries and allies, including the main equipment being supplied from the USA.

Jānis Sproģis and Kārlis Maulics, co-founders of “Liepāja ESS,” expressed their gratitude for the collaborative effort that facilitated the project, stating their commitment to implementing it “on time and in accordance with the highest safety and quality standards.”

NGEN Group describes the project as a milestone, being the first energy storage station in the Baltics to use Tesla Megapack technology and the first stand-alone battery project directly connected to Latvia’s transmission system operator, Augstsprieguma tīkls (AST). The company plans to deliver a 100 MW / 200 MWh stand-alone battery energy storage project at the Grobiņa substation in the Dienvidkurzeme region, with commercial operations planned by the end of 2026.
