Fallout 3 Remaster & Xbox Plans Revealed: New Games & Hardware

by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Microsoft has outlined its Xbox roadmap for 2026, confirming that several previously announced projects remain in active development, alongside plans for new hardware and content releases. The company is navigating a period of hardware decline, but is focusing on software and services to drive growth.

Ongoing Game Development

A report indicates that the remaster of Fallout 3 is still “actively in development.” This news will likely reassure fans, as the project was initially revealed in FTC documents during Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard three years ago. Bethesda, the developer, aims to ensure the remaster meets a high standard of quality, similar to the successful launch of last year’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remaster. Bethesda President Todd Howard recently expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Oblivion remaster to IGN.

The confirmation that Fallout 3 is still in development comes as a relief to fans who had speculated that the recent countdown timer on Amazon related to the game. However, that timer did not signal an imminent release of the Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas remasters.

In addition to the Fallout 3 remaster, development continues on other key titles. Forza Motorsport 6, developed by Playground Games, is scheduled for release in May. Halo: The Battle Evolved is tentatively planned for a summer release. Gears of War: E-Day is slated for the latter half of 2026, and Fable from Playground Games is targeted for a fall release. Microsoft is reportedly aiming to avoid a direct clash with the November release of Grand Theft Auto 6 for both Gears of War: E-Day and Fable.

New Content for Starfield

Microsoft’s space exploration RPG, Starfield, is also set to receive new content “soon.” There are also reports suggesting a potential release on PlayStation 5, though details remain unconfirmed.

Hardware Plans

Microsoft plans to release a new Xbox console in 2026. This new hardware will include Wi-Fi connectivity, intended to reduce latency for Xbox cloud gaming. There are currently no indications of a next-generation Xbox console launch this year, aligning with recent comments from AMD’s president. However, Microsoft intends to share more details about its future console plans later in the year.

Other Upcoming Releases

Double Fine’s Kiln is expected to launch in April. Microsoft showcased a range of these games and updates during the Xbox Developer Direct showcase last month, providing new information and gameplay footage.

Xbox’s Broader Strategy

These announcements come as Microsoft adjusts its strategy in the gaming market. The company is increasingly focused on cross-platform releases, Xbox handheld devices, and potentially a future where Xbox consoles function more like gaming PCs. This shift in focus is prompting a re-evaluation of the Xbox platform’s history and legacy, with a focus on games that embody the “Xbox spirit.”
