Needle Found in Dim Sum: Customer Injured, Products Recalled in Hong Kong

Needle Found in Dim Sum, Injuring Diner in Hong Kong

A woman in Hong Kong required hospital treatment after discovering a metal needle hidden inside a piece of siu mai purchased from an AEON supermarket, multiple news outlets reported on Thursday, February 5, 2026. The incident has raised concerns about food safety standards at the retailer.

According to reports from Yahoo News, the woman was eating the siu mai when she felt a sharp pain in her tongue. She was subsequently taken to a hospital where doctors found a 1.5-centimeter long, rusted needle embedded in her tongue.

The incident prompted a swift response from the supermarket chain and local food safety authorities. According to reports from Hong Kong 01, the supermarket has removed the affected batch of siu mai from its shelves and is cooperating with the investigation. The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has reportedly taken samples for testing.

Several other local news outlets, including am730 and TVB, reported that the employee of the supermarket stated that the company had insurance.

This incident follows a similar case reported in China earlier this year, where human teeth were allegedly found in sausages and dim sum, raising broader concerns about food safety practices in the region, as reported by Star News.

Consumers with concerns about food safety are encouraged to contact their local health authorities.
