– Bahrain’s Farmers’ Market is playing an increasingly prominent role in the Kingdom’s efforts to bolster national agricultural production and food security. The weekly market, held every Saturday at the Budaiya Botanical Garden, has become a popular destination for families and a focal point for growing interest in locally-sourced produce and sustainable development.
The market transforms into a vibrant community space each weekend, offering visitors a direct connection to Bahraini farmers and a chance to purchase fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Beyond the commercial aspect, the market serves as a platform for education and cultural exchange, fostering a greater appreciation for the Kingdom’s agricultural heritage.
Organized by the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture in partnership with the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD), and with support from the private sector, the market aims to strengthen the link between producers and consumers. This direct-to-consumer model not only enhances local production but also preserves product quality, reduces costs, and builds consumer confidence in Bahraini-grown goods.
This season, the market features 33 Bahraini farmers offering over 100 varieties of fresh produce. The initiative contributes to increased income for farmers and encourages expansion of agricultural activities within the Kingdom. The market’s success reflects a broader national strategy to enhance food security, a priority outlined by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and supported by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The market’s significance extends beyond its economic impact. It also serves as a developmental and awareness platform, promoting sustainable agriculture, responsible consumption, and environmental protection. A growing emphasis is placed on showcasing the contributions of Bahraini women and youth in the agricultural sector, with dedicated spaces for agricultural and artisanal projects.
Public attendance at the market has been steadily increasing, indicating a rising awareness of the importance and quality of local products. This trend aligns with Bahrain’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and its broader food security strategy. The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, in collaboration with national partners and the private sector, views the market as a key component in building a sustainable food system.
The current season, which began on December 7, 2024, is scheduled to run until February 14, 2026. The launch of the 12th edition of the market coincided with Bahrain’s National Day celebrations and the anniversary of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s accession to the throne.
Engineer Khalid Al-Osaimi, CEO of STC Bahrain, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable development and supporting the local community through its support of the Farmers’ Market. This partnership underscores the role of the private sector in contributing to Bahrain’s vision for a prosperous and sustainable future.
In February 2026, the Farmers’ Market was reported to have recorded sales of 212 tons of agricultural produce, demonstrating its substantial contribution to the local agricultural economy. The market is considered a key initiative in supporting local agricultural production and promoting Bahraini products, directly addressing the Kingdom’s food security needs.
The Bahraini Farmers’ Market represents a successful model for connecting local producers with consumers, fostering a sense of community, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. As Bahrain continues to prioritize food security and economic diversification, the market is poised to play an increasingly vital role in the Kingdom’s development.
