Latvian National Museum of Art Seeks New Director Following Longtime Leader’s Retirement

The Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMM) is entering a new chapter as it begins the search for a new director. The announcement comes following the decision by Māra Lāce, who has led the museum for many years, to retire on .

The Ministry of Culture (KM) has launched an open competition to fill the position, outlining key responsibilities and qualifications for prospective candidates. According to the Ministry, the director will be responsible for the overall planning, management, and coordination of the LNMM’s operations, as well as ensuring the efficient allocation of the museum’s resources.

The role comes with a gross monthly salary of €4,373. Candidates must possess a higher academic or second-level professional higher education in either the humanities or social sciences. A minimum of two years of experience in a managerial role is also required.

Language proficiency is a critical component of the requirements. Applicants must demonstrate excellent knowledge of Latvian and a good working knowledge of English, specifically achieving at least a C1 level in Latvian and a B1 level for oral communication in English, as defined by the Europass language self-assessment table.

The LNMM, described as the largest depository of professional art in Latvia, regularly hosts art exhibitions, scientific conferences, and cultural events. It also actively participates in international projects and publishes museum-related materials. The museum comprises several entities including Art Museum RIGA BOURSE and the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
