After years of anticipation fueled by fan demand, a remake of the original 1995 Rayman is officially in development at Ubisoft, according to statements from the game’s creator, Michel Ancel. The confirmation comes as the platformer franchise approaches its 30th anniversary, and follows a period of speculation sparked by an age rating for a “Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition” appearing last year.

Ancel, who retired from the games industry in 2020 but has since returned as a consultant, revealed details about the project in a recent interview with Retro Gamer magazine. While Ubisoft has remained largely silent on the specifics, Ancel’s comments offer the first concrete indication of the remake’s direction. The project appears to be focused on revisiting the original game, rather than developing a completely new installment, as the franchise hasn’t seen a major release since 2013’s critically acclaimed Rayman Legends (with the exception of mobile title Rayman Mini in 2019).

A key goal of the remake, Ancel explained, is to preserve the “pixel-precise” gameplay that defined the original Rayman while addressing some of its more challenging aspects. “I think Rayman is still a fun game, and there’s a lot of content,” Ancel stated. He also noted the unique appeal of the original’s constraints, saying, “It also has pixel-precise gameplay, so it’s not always easy, but it’s interesting that the constraints of yesterday make it still feel original today.” This suggests Ubisoft intends to maintain the core feel of the original, avoiding a radical overhaul of the game’s mechanics.

However, the remake won’t simply be a direct port. Recognizing that the original Rayman’s difficulty could be a barrier for modern players, Ubisoft is planning to implement changes to improve accessibility. Specifically, Ancel indicated that the company is “adding a few more checkpoints and things like that just to make it a bit less frustrating.” This adjustment aims to mitigate the impact of limited lives and frequent “game over” screens, which were hallmarks of the original’s punishing difficulty. “I think it’s a nice move, because that’s the only point that could be a problem for non-skilled players,” Ancel added.

The confirmation of the remake follows a period of uncertainty surrounding Ubisoft’s plans for the Rayman franchise. In September 2025, Ubisoft stated that “Rayman is in very good hands,” but provided no further details. This vague statement, coupled with the appearance of the anniversary edition age rating, fueled speculation about a potential revival of the series. The recent comments from Ancel now provide a definitive answer, confirming that a remake is indeed underway.

While Ancel’s involvement appears to be in a consulting role, his insights are crucial given his role as the original creator of Rayman. His emphasis on preserving the “soul” of the original game suggests a careful and respectful approach to the remake. The project’s focus on accessibility improvements, while maintaining the core gameplay experience, indicates a desire to appeal to both longtime fans and a new generation of players.

The timing of the announcement is also significant. The upcoming 30th anniversary of the Rayman franchise provides a natural opportunity to revisit the series and introduce it to a wider audience. The success of other recent remakes and remasters, such as those of classic PlayStation titles, demonstrates the demand for updated versions of beloved games. This trend likely influenced Ubisoft’s decision to greenlight the Rayman remake.

Despite the positive news, some industry observers have expressed caution, citing recent cancellations of projects at Ubisoft amidst company-wide layoffs. The fate of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, which was reportedly close to completion before being shelved, serves as a reminder that even well-advanced projects can be subject to cancellation. However, the relatively low-risk nature of a remake of the original Rayman – a well-established and beloved title – suggests that it is more likely to see the light of day than more ambitious, unproven projects.

The exact release date and platform availability of the Rayman remake remain unknown. However, with the project now officially confirmed, and development underway, an official announcement with more details is expected in the near future. The remake promises to bring a classic platformer experience to a new generation of gamers, while honoring the legacy of the original Rayman.
