New Hampshire Woman Dies in Maine Snowmobile Crash

Jackman, Maine – A 23-year-old New Hampshire woman died Friday after losing control of her snowmobile in Jackman, Maine. Michelle Carolina Cantos was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Game wardens responded to a report of a possible fatal snowmobile accident around 11:45 a.m. On ITS Trail 89, according to Lieutenant Kris Barboza of the Maine Warden Service. Cantos was operating a Polaris snowmobile when the incident occurred.

Cantos was riding with a group of five family and friends, traveling north on the trail, when she lost control of the snowmobile. She was fourth in the group at the time of the crash.

Authorities indicated that inexperience appears to have been a contributing factor in the accident. The Maine Warden Service is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Cantos’ death.

The incident underscores the dangers of snowmobiling, particularly for those unfamiliar with the terrain and the operation of the vehicles. Officials have previously urged caution, especially as trail conditions can vary significantly.

Here’s a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
