ELON, N.C. – The University of Dayton softball team continued its impressive run, securing a pair of victories on Saturday at the Phoenix Invitational, defeating Elon 9-8 and Mount St. Mary’s 3-1. A scheduled Sunday game against Elon was cancelled due to anticipated inclement weather.
With these wins, Dayton’s record improves to 7-1 for the season. Elon now stands at 1-7 while Mount St. Mary’s is 1-4.
Dayton Rallies for 9-8 Win Over Elon
The Flyers demonstrated resilience in their first game of the day, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome Elon and secure a 9-8 victory. Junior Kirnan Bailey had a strong performance, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Sophomore Katelin Goodwin contributed a two-run home run in the first inning, marking her second of the season.
Goodwin finished the game with four RBIs, including the two crucial runs that proved to be the winning tally with her single in the seventh. Camrynn Linneman earned the win for Dayton (2-0), while Anna Dew took the loss for Elon (1-2). Izzy Kemp secured her second save of the season.
Kemp Dominates in 3-1 Victory Over Mount St. Mary’s
In the second game, Dayton defeated Mount St. Mary’s 3-1, highlighted by a dominant pitching performance from senior Izzy Kemp. Kemp struck out 10 of the 13 batters she faced, marking her third double-digit strikeout game of the season.
Junior Deirdre Flaherty hit her first home run of the season, a decisive shot that brought in the winning run. Kemp (3-0) was credited with the win, while Sophia Vlahos suffered the loss for Mount St. Mary’s (0-1).
Looking Ahead
Due to the cancellation of Sunday’s game against Elon, the Flyers will have a break in competition before heading to Lexington, Kentucky, to participate in the John Cropp Classic from February 27th to March 1st. At the classic, Dayton will face Michigan State, Murray State, and the host team, Kentucky, over the course of five games at UK’s John Cropp Stadium.
Dayton’s next game is scheduled for at 5:30 PM against Kentucky.
