Houston is poised for a significant warming trend this week, with temperatures expected to climb into the mid-80s, marking some of the warmest weather the city has seen so far in . The shift comes after a chilly start to Presidents’ Day, , and a January that saw both unusually warm spells and a surprisingly cold finish.
The year began with a peak temperature of 84°F on , making it the warmest day of the year to date. However, that warmth was short-lived, giving way to a colder period towards the end of the month. February has, on average, been approximately 5°F above normal, but has yet to see temperatures reach the 80°F mark – a situation that is expected to change rapidly.
Today, , Houston residents enjoying a day off for Presidents’ Day can expect partly sunny skies and highs in the lower 70s, following a cool start around 50°F. Winds will be light, coming from the southeast. Overnight lows are forecast to be warmer, in the upper 50s.
The real shift will be felt on , as a more pronounced southerly flow brings increased humidity. Highs are predicted to range from the upper 70s to around 80°F, with partly to mostly sunny conditions. Afternoon winds may gust up to 20-25 mph. Lows will remain mild, falling only into the low to mid-60s.
The peak of the warmth is anticipated on , , and , with highs potentially reaching the mid-80s, and possibly even the upper 80s. The exact temperature will depend on proximity to the coast – with inland areas likely to be warmer – and the amount of cloud cover. Despite the warmth, nights will remain relatively mild, with lows in the 60s.
Looking ahead to the weekend, a cold front is expected to move through the area, potentially bringing a chance of rain. However, the timing of the front remains uncertain, making a precise forecast difficult. A large custom car and truck show is scheduled to take place in Conroe this weekend, and current indications suggest generally fair weather with partly sunny skies and highs in the 70s. Any rainfall associated with the front is not currently expected to be as significant as the storms experienced previously.
The warming trend is not expected to be a lasting one. Following the passage of the front, temperatures are forecast to cool down early next week, before potentially rebounding to around 80°F once again.
It’s worth noting that Texas officially recognizes the holiday as “Presidents’ Day” by law, differing from other states in its spelling.
