Mewgenics Sells 1 Million Copies & Generates $25M Revenue in 2026

by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Mewgenics, the indie roguelike from Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, has achieved remarkable commercial success, selling over one million copies in just a few days. While that number might seem modest compared to blockbuster titles, it represents a significant accomplishment for a small, independent development team.

The game has generated approximately $25 million in gross revenue, according to analysis by Alinea Analytics. Rhys Elliott, an analyst at Alinea Analytics, noted that Mewgenics is currently the second highest-earning title of 2026, trailing only Nioh 3, which retails for €80 compared to Mewgenics’ $30 price point.

The sales figures surpass expectations set by the developers themselves. Glaiel previously stated on social media that 250,000 copies sold within 12 hours would be considered a success. The game quickly exceeded that benchmark, reaching 250,000 copies sold in just 12 hours and 150,000 copies in the first six hours of release. This initial surge saw the game recoup its $1.4 million development budget in a mere three hours.

Mewgenics’ launch performance also outpaced other popular titles. At its peak, the game surpassed Overwatch, Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in terms of concurrent players on Steam. What we have is particularly noteworthy given the established player bases and marketing budgets of those franchises.

The success of Mewgenics has secured plans for a console release and the development of downloadable content (DLC). However, both initiatives will require additional time for development, according to the developers.

The game has also been met with critical acclaim, receiving a Metacritic score of 89 from 38 reviews. Polygon described Mewgenics as “a charmingly churlish game” and “the first GOTY contender” for 2026. The game’s unique blend of roguelike mechanics and unconventional themes has resonated with players and critics alike.

McMillen, known for his work on The Binding of Isaac, previously held the sales record for an indie game launch with The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which sold 40,000 copies in its first day. Mewgenics has shattered that record, demonstrating a significant increase in both the reach and commercial viability of indie games.

The development of Mewgenics was a lengthy process, spanning 14 years with periods of being put on hold and even canceled. The game was initially announced in 2012, paused in 2014, and officially canceled in 2016 before being revived two years later. This protracted development cycle underscores the dedication and perseverance of McMillen, and Glaiel.

The rapid financial success of Mewgenics is a testament to the growing demand for innovative and challenging indie games. The game’s unique aesthetic, complex gameplay, and compelling narrative have clearly struck a chord with players, establishing it as a major success story in the indie gaming landscape. The developers celebrated the milestone with a cat-shaped cake and replica awards.
