Savannah Chrisley Faces On-Air Correction During Guest Hosting Debut on ‘The View’

Savannah Chrisley’s first week as a guest host on ABC’s “The View” was marked by a swift on-air correction from the show’s permanent hosts after she incorrectly asserted that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee for 2028. The exchange occurred during a discussion about Ocasio-Cortez’s recent remarks regarding potential U.S. Involvement in a conflict between China, and Taiwan.

The conversation on Wednesday, February 18th, stemmed from Ocasio-Cortez’s comments at the Munich Security Conference on February 13th, where she expressed a desire to avoid a military confrontation with China over Taiwan. “I think what we are hoping for is that we want to make sure that we never get to that point, and we want to make sure that we are moving in all of our economic research and our global positions to avoid any such confrontation,” Ocasio-Cortez stated, according to reports.

The situation surrounding Taiwan remains tense, with China viewing the island as a breakaway province and Taiwan asserting its sovereignty. In late December, China conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, simulating attacks on both land and sea targets and practicing a potential blockade of the island’s ports.

During the discussion on “The View,” Chrisley attempted to draw a parallel between scrutiny of Ocasio-Cortez’s responses and perceived missteps by former President Donald Trump. She argued that “mispronouncing a word is totally different than not knowing your position on Taiwan,” and emphasized the importance of “how you recover from something.” Chrisley then stated, “AOC, though, is also the Democrats’ pick for the next election.”

Her claim was immediately challenged by the show’s hosts. Whoopi Goldberg responded with a firm “No, no, no!” while Joy Behar interjected, suggesting Chrisley check with California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is widely speculated to be considering a run for the presidency in 2028. Sunny Hostin, a legal analyst, clarified that Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly stated she does not intend to run for president in the next election cycle.

Ocasio-Cortez herself has publicly denied any plans for a presidential bid. Speaking to the New York Times, she explained her presence at the Munich Security Conference was “not because I’m running for president, not because I’ve made some kind of decision about a horse race or a candidacy,” but rather to “sound the alarm bells” about growing inequality and its potential to fuel extremist movements.

Chrisley is filling in as a guest host for Alyssa Farah Griffin, who is currently on maternity leave. Griffin gave birth to her first child on February 10th, as announced by Whoopi Goldberg on “The View.” ABC confirmed Chrisley’s guest hosting stint would run from February 17th to February 20th.

The incident highlights the show’s commitment to fact-checking and its willingness to challenge assertions made by guest hosts, even during live broadcasts. The panel also includes Sara Haines and Ana Navarro as regular hosts.
