The Last-Mile Data Problem: Empromptu’s ‘Golden Pipelines’ Aim to Accelerate Enterprise AI

Enterprises are increasingly finding that the promise of artificial intelligence is hampered not by the sophistication of models, but by the difficulty of preparing data for those models. A new approach, dubbed “golden pipelines” by Empromptu, aims to address this “last-mile” data problem by integrating data normalization directly into the AI application workflow. This contrasts with traditional Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) tools, which are optimized for reporting and structured analytics.

The core distinction, as articulated by Empromptu CEO and co-founder Shanea Leven, is between “inference integrity” and “reporting integrity.” Traditional ETL tools like dbt and Fivetran excel at ensuring data is clean and consistent for dashboards and business intelligence. However, AI applications require data that is often messy, evolving, and operational – coming from live systems rather than static datasets. Golden pipelines are designed to handle this complexity, reducing data preparation time from weeks to under an hour, according to Empromptu.

How Golden Pipelines Work

Golden pipelines function as an automated layer positioned between raw operational data and the AI application itself. The system performs five key functions: data ingestion from various sources (files, databases, APIs, unstructured documents), automated inspection and cleaning, structuring with schema definitions, labeling and enrichment to address missing information, and built-in governance and compliance checks including audit trails and access controls.

Technically, the approach combines deterministic preprocessing with AI-assisted normalization. Rather than relying solely on pre-defined rules, the system leverages AI to identify inconsistencies, infer missing structure, and generate classifications based on the context of the AI model. Crucially, every transformation is logged and linked to downstream AI evaluation, allowing for continuous monitoring and improvement.

This evaluation loop is central to the golden pipeline concept. If a data normalization step negatively impacts the accuracy of the AI model, the system detects this through continuous evaluation against production behavior. This feedback loop, coupling data preparation directly to model performance, is a key differentiator from traditional ETL pipelines.

Golden pipelines are embedded directly into the Empromptu Builder and operate automatically as part of the AI application creation process. From the user’s perspective, they are building AI features. the golden pipeline operates behind the scenes to ensure the data is clean, structured, governed, and production-ready.

Beyond ETL: A Different Problem

Leven emphasizes that golden pipelines aren’t intended to replace existing ETL tools. “We’re not replacing dbt or Fivetran, enterprises will continue to use those for warehouse integrity and structured reporting,” she stated. Instead, golden pipelines address a specific gap: the challenge of preparing real-world, imperfect operational data for AI features without extensive manual intervention.

The system’s trustworthiness relies on its auditability and continuous evaluation. “It is not unsupervised magic. It is reviewable, auditable and continuously evaluated against production behavior,” Leven explained. “If normalization reduces downstream accuracy, the evaluation loop catches it. That feedback coupling between data preparation and model performance is something traditional ETL pipelines do not provide.”

VOW: A Real-World Deployment

Event management platform VOW provides a practical example of the benefits of golden pipelines. The company handles complex event data for organizations like GLAAD, where data consistency across sponsors, tickets, seating, and other elements is critical. Previously, VOW relied on manually written regular expressions to manage this data.

When VOW sought to build an AI-generated floor plan feature that updated data in near real-time, ensuring data accuracy became paramount. Golden pipelines automated the process of extracting data from often messy and unstructured floor plans, formatting it, and distributing it across the platform without significant engineering effort. VOW initially used Empromptu to solve a floor plan analysis problem that neither Google nor Amazon’s AI teams could address, and is now rewriting its entire platform using the system.

Implications for Enterprise AI

Golden pipelines are particularly well-suited for organizations building integrated AI applications where data preparation is a significant bottleneck. The approach may be less relevant for teams with mature data engineering organizations and established ETL processes, or for those building standalone AI models rather than integrated applications.

The key question is whether data preparation is hindering AI velocity within an organization. If data scientists are spending significant time preparing datasets for experimentation that engineering teams then need to rebuild for production, integrated data preparation offers a solution. The trade-off involves platform integration versus tool flexibility. Adopting golden pipelines means committing to an integrated approach where data preparation, AI application development, and governance are unified within a single platform. Organizations preferring a best-of-breed approach may find this limiting, but benefit from eliminating handoffs between data preparation and application development.
