Venezuela: Police Arrest Man Suspected of Cable Theft in Ciudad Bolivar

Cable Theft Suspect Apprehended in Ciudad Bolívar

A man was arrested in Ciudad Bolívar after being spotted by police on the roof of a commercial building, reportedly attempting to steal cable. The arrest was carried out by a commission from the Angostura del Orinoco Municipal Police, according to official reports.

Police were conducting a patrol of the commercial area when they observed the suspect on the building’s roof. When officers attempted to stop him, the man allegedly tried to flee, but was apprehended by the police commission.

Authorities stated that two rolls of cable of varying diameters were found in the suspect’s possession. The evidence has been turned over to the Public Ministry for further investigation.

The suspect now faces charges related to theft, and is expected to appear before a Control Function Tribunal in the coming hours.

Recent Cable Theft Cases in Bolívar State

This incident is the latest in a series of cable theft cases reported in Bolívar state. Earlier this year, Robert Alexander Junior González, 29, was arrested by the Scientific, Criminalistic and Forensic Investigation Corps (Cicpc) for allegedly stealing cable from health centers and telecommunications companies in Ciudad Bolívar. González, along with accomplices William Nazareno Blanco Davis, known as “El Blade,” Guinipu, and “El Catire” (who remain at large), reportedly targeted health facilities, schools, and telecom businesses to steal electrical cabling for resale.

During his arrest, police reportedly found various types of cable, a saw, a cutting blade, and fixing clips in González’s possession. He was already wanted by the Fourth Control Court of Ciudad Bolívar on charges of aggravated theft and resisting authority.

In a separate incident, the National Guard (GNB) arrested a man and a woman suspected of being involved in the theft of cable from CANTV, the state-owned telecommunications company, in the Marhuanta sector of Ciudad Bolívar. This arrest occurred less than a week after a similar operation in the same area.

Broader Concerns Regarding Theft and Security

These incidents highlight ongoing concerns about theft and security in Ciudad Bolívar and the surrounding Bolívar state. The patrols and arrests are part of broader security measures implemented during Carnival celebrations, but the continued targeting of essential infrastructure raises questions about the effectiveness of current preventative measures.

The theft of cable from health centers and telecommunications companies disrupts essential services and can have significant economic consequences. Authorities are continuing to investigate these cases and pursue those responsible.
