A Cosmic Companion: Asteroid to Dance with Earth and Moon in Rare 2-Month Orbit
A Small Asteroid to Approach Earth and Orbit for 2 Months
A tiny asteroid, 2024 PT5, is set to approach Earth later this month and be captured by the planet’s gravity, orbiting for up to 2 months.
Discovery and Orbit
According to foreign news agencies, our Moon is about to have a new companion in its orbit around the Earth. The asteroid, 2024 PT5, was first discovered on August 7 by the Asteroid Impact Alert System (ATLAS), an early warning system funded by NASA.
The asteroid is relatively small, with a diameter of only 10 meters. During its 53-day journey near Earth, it will not complete a full orbit but will instead travel in a horseshoe-shaped path before escaping the planet’s gravitational pull.
Earth’s Gravity and Asteroid Capture
Earth’s gravity often captures asteroids, holding them in orbit around the planet. Some asteroids orbit in an elliptical path for one or two complete cycles before being separated. In 2006, an asteroid was captured by Earth and orbited for up to a year, from July 2006 to July 2007.
The orbit of 2024 PT5 is similar to that of the asteroid 2022 NX1, which has already passed Earth twice, in 1980 and 2022, without completing a full orbit. The asteroid is expected to return again in 2051.
