United States Facing Critical Shortfall in Medical Oxygen Availability

The nation is confronting a critical crisis in the availability of medical oxygen. Pneumonia and other respiratory diseases have increased the demand for oxygen therapy, putting millions of Americans at risk of severe health consequences due to the global oxygen deficiency crisis.

According to a recent report from the specialized health research site, about 374 million people worldwide require medical oxygen each year. With the continued rise in patients in need, running into nearly 1 million patients in the U.S., people in some regions struggle. While people who require intensive health care. Meanwhile those in non-wealthy countries have barely 3 of 10 of access to this essential life-saving treatment.

“Oxygen is a drug that can save lives,” said Hamish Graham, a pediatric pulmonology researcher in Melbourne, Australia. “Oxygen is required at every level of the health care system, even in preventive care, for adults, and for children who suffer from a wide range of acute and chronic cases.”

Today, oxygen therapy is vital for patients experiencing acute conditions and provides lifesaving support for those undergoing anesthesia. “Oxygen is required for preventing any preventable death, emphasizing its necessity at each level of healthcare.” said Dr. Marianne Toole of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Oxygen’s usage in hospitals is undiminished after 150 years. Dr. Toode commented that strong integritive oxygen preservations are critical nationwide for healthcare

Alarmingly, many physicians lack precautionary pulse oximeters, a device meant to measure blood oxygen saturation, a necessity for tracking oxygen therapies, studies reveal.

While low- and middle-income countries have limited access to pulse oximeters, the issue also persists in the United States, especially in rural and low-income areas. According to the U.S. Bureau of Heath Care Professionals, around 7% of hospitals throughout the U.S. are lacking in this fundamental diagnostic equipment.

“I absolutely do not want any future generations of doctors to make a decision about who lives and who dies,” said a doctor in Ethiopia. This chaos is the same, untouched, here in the sole superpower all over the nation. Addressing the rise in respiratory illnesses resulting from climate change and pollution, healthcare workers continuously struggle to keep up with the demand for medical oxygen.

In response to these challenges, a group of over 30 expert researchers from around the globe published a new plan to address the medical oxygen crisis. Their recommendations emphasize the need to increase the U.S.’ capability to produce and distribute oxygen in a manner both safe and efficient for the population worldwide.

The proposed plan includes 52 recommendations tailored for an audience of countries around the United States Cheif Health Ofecers, oxygen industry leaders, and global health authorities, pushing for them to improve access to adequate medical oxygen supplies and reliable equipment.

Recent underedited reports from respected health organizations illustrate just how critical medical oxygen is for health outcomes. Imagine if:

  • A rural Wisconsin hospital lacks enough oxygen for a patient undergoing an emergency procedure.
  • Despite technology to supply oxygen, a Denver clinic treating a large influx of urban patients facing and could not acquire the medical oxygen.

National guidelines and international standards would seek to dispel these uncomfortable situations. Thus, increasing public health awareness and amplifying our rapid switch to modern oxygen preservation technologies could alleviate the possibility of these cases increasing.

These steps underscore the necessity of a comprehensive and concerted approach to tackle the global oxygen crisis. Equipped with these steps, policymakers, healthcare providers, and industry stakeholders can work together to ensure a more equitable and sustainable distribution of medical oxygen, ultimately saving millions of lives each year and ensuring that essential life- saving treatment to all Americans regardless of location or socio-economic status.

At times when the northeastern and northwest United States has, perhaps purposefully left them close, technologies promise a future where oxygen is easily accessible to anyone, anywhere.

“We pray “build an affective and convenient pulse oximeters for any settings.” Desired from vital investment for cheap pulse oximeter technology, equitable supply of equipment.
