former NFL lineman John Malecki found a new passion – and a massive online following – after a cheap coffee table led him to woodworking.
John Malecki can thank a flimsy coffee table for his 1.2 million YouTube subscribers. Had he owned a sturdier piece of furniture, maybe he wouldn’t have thought twice about his enthusiasm for HGTVS “Fixer Upper,” which he watched on repeat as a fringe offensive lineman in the NFL.
As it turns out, malecki’s table broke right before his final preseason with his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013. And as the “Fixer Upper” fan he was, building a new one sounded way better than just buying a replacement.
At that point, Malecki was on his fifth team in four years. An undrafted free agent out of Pitt, football had always been his north star, guiding him in any decision since elementary school. Now, in his mid-20s, his north star was dimming.
In between training camp practices, with the help of some Home Depot two-by-fours,Malecki constructed a homemade coffee table for his South Side Pittsburgh apartment. As he reflected on his appreciation for the work Chip and Joanna Gaines did on “Fixer Upper,” he thought, “I kind of want to build my own cool stuff.”
From NFL Gridiron to Woodworking Workshop: John Malecki’s Unexpected JourneyPittsburgh, PA – john Malecki lived out a childhood dream, playing in the NFL. But the journey wasn’t always glamorous. After his career ended abruptly, malecki found himself adrift, struggling to find his place off the field. His path to redemption, however, led him to a surprising new passion: woodworking.
Growing up in Murrysville, just a short drive from Pittsburgh, Malecki had a singular focus: making it to the NFL. At 10 years old,he penned his dream on a piece of paper, placing it in a time capsule. Years later, that dream became reality. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Pittsburgh steelers, and even had a brief stint with the Washington Redskins.
But the NFL life came with sacrifices. Malecki spent Christmases alone in hotel rooms, away from his family. “At the time I was a firm believer that you have to suffer to get what you want in life,” he said.
His time with the Steelers ended in 2013 when head coach Mike Tomlin delivered the news: Malecki’s football career was over.
The transition to civilian life was jarring. Malecki interviewed for a sales job, only to be told, “this is great, John, but you don’t have any experience.” The sting of rejection was profound. “I was useless,” Malecki admitted. “I had no skills. … All my childhood hopes and dreams crumbling. I was just sad. Just lost in multiple facets of life.”
Thru it all, Malecki found solace in woodworking. He had always enjoyed building things, and now it became a lifeline.
One day, while hanging out with his former teammate,Baron Batch,Malecki’s woodworking hobby took a turn. Batch, impressed by Malecki’s creations, suggested he start sharing his work online.
Malecki took the leap, posting photos and videos of his projects on social media. The response was overwhelming. People were captivated by his craftsmanship and his story.
What began as a way to cope with the end of his football career blossomed into a thriving business. Malecki now creates custom furniture and home decor, sharing his passion and skills with a growing community of followers.
His journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the unexpected paths life can take. From the gridiron to the woodworking workshop, John malecki found a new way to build his dreams.

John Malecki traded his football cleats for woodworking tools, building a thriving career one custom piece at a time.
John Malecki’s journey is a testament to the power of reinvention. After a promising career in the NFL, the former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman found himself at a crossroads.
“I was just boozing and hanging out with my buddies,” Malecki laughed, recalling the period after his football career. “We were curious a lot, and I was trying to figure out that next thing in life.”
That “next thing” emerged unexpectedly in the form of a workbench and a desire to create.
Malecki, along with his friend and roommate, Batch, began experimenting with woodworking in their new, sparsely furnished home. What started as a casual hobby quickly blossomed into a passion.
“What if we built stuff?” Malecki asked Batch one day, gazing at the cluttered workbench in their garage.
Soon, their home was filled with handcrafted tables, cabinets, and shelves. The duo, fueled by curiosity and a shared love for building, decided to take their newfound skills public.
They opened Studio A.M., a woodworking studio where Batch’s artistic vision met Malecki’s woodworking expertise.
Malecki’s foray into the digital world began with simple Facebook and Instagram posts showcasing their creations. The response was overwhelming.
“I would love one,” and “Could you make me that?” flooded their inboxes.
encouraged by the positive feedback, Malecki ventured into the world of YouTube. His early videos were, in his own words, “awful.” But one video, a tutorial on building a cross-cut sled, unexpectedly went viral, racking up hundreds of thousands of views.
“Holy s—,” he thought, “I don’t know how to capitalize on this, but this feels good.”
Malecki channeled the same dedication and work ethic he honed on the football field into his woodworking.
“Effort and attitude,” Malecki said.”Those are two of the controllable things you have. I took that from football and applied it dramatically to the next phase of my life. You can’t lose if you don’t quit.”
His perseverance paid off. In 2018, Malecki secured a year-long sponsorship worth $65,000, marking a critically important financial breakthrough.Today, he earns nearly as much in a month from woodworking as he did in his best year playing in the NFL.
Former teammates, like Max Starks and Ramon Foster, have witnessed Malecki’s conversion firsthand.
“We knew he was creative, we knew he was funny, but to combine both of those things and do it so seamlessly and be genuine about it is indeed something that’s kind of fascinating,” Starks said.
Foster, who owns several of Malecki’s custom creations, admires his friend’s resilience and determination.
“He came to work every day, he took a lot of crap, and he stayed and persevered,” Foster said.
Malecki’s story is a reminder that passion, hard work, and a willingness to embrace new challenges can lead to unexpected and fulfilling paths.

For many Americans, the dream of homeownership feels increasingly out of reach. Soaring housing costs and a desire for a simpler life are pushing some to explore unconventional paths. Enter the tiny house movement, where less is truly more.
Sarah and John Miller,a young couple from Chicago, recently took the plunge, trading their cramped apartment for a custom-built tiny home on wheels. “We were tired of the rat race,” Sarah explains.”Working long hours just to afford rent in a city that felt increasingly impersonal. We wanted something more meaningful, more connected to nature.”
Their 280-square-foot home, affectionately nicknamed “The Nest,” is a testament to minimalist living. Every inch is thoughtfully designed, with built-in storage, multi-functional furniture, and an abundance of natural light.
“It’s amazing how much space we actually have,” John says. “We’ve decluttered our lives and realized we don’t need all the ’stuff’ we thought we did.”
The Millers’ tiny home is also a reflection of their commitment to sustainability. Solar panels power their appliances, rainwater is collected for gardening, and composting toilets minimize their environmental footprint.[Video: A timelapse of the Millers building their tiny home, showcasing the construction process and their DIY skills.]
“Living tiny isn’t just about the size of your house,” Sarah says. “It’s about simplifying your life, reducing your impact on the planet, and focusing on what truly matters.”
The Millers’ journey is inspiring a growing number of Americans to reconsider their housing choices. While tiny living isn’t for everyone, it offers a compelling alternative for those seeking a more intentional and sustainable way of life.
