Charlize Theron has embraced the physically demanding role of Sasha in Netflix’s survival thriller “Apex,” describing the filming process as a series of “totally insane” challenges that she welcomed as personally necessary. The Oscar-winning actress performed her own stunts throughout the production, including a 30-foot free jump into water and scaling a 52-foot rock wall without assistance, experiences she said left her in disbelief at what she had accomplished.

Theron stars as Sasha, a grieving rock climber who travels to the Australian wilderness seeking solace after a personal loss, only to be hunted by a charismatic local portrayed by Taron Egerton, who reveals himself to be a serial killer. The film, directed by Baltasar Kormákur, places Theron’s character in relentless physical peril, mirroring the actress’s own commitment to performing extreme sequences without reliance on stunt doubles.

On just the fourth day of filming, Theron completed a 30-foot jump from a cliff into six feet of water at Ginninderra Falls near Canberra, a maneuver she repeated eight times. She recalled the moment as both terrifying and surreal, saying, “believe I just did that.” The climactic sequence required her to scale a 52-foot-high rock wall in Glenbrook Gorge near Sydney, where she was lowered down and then had to climb back up using only a single safety line, with no additional rigging available above her.

I only had one secure safety line that was holding me and they couldn’t build anything above me to rig me up, so that’s all I had. I climbed that last bit completely by myself without anybody pulling me up.

The film’s intense physical demands align with Theron’s established reputation for performing her own stunts in action-oriented roles such as “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Atomic Blonde,” and “The Old Guard.” In “Apex,” her dedication to authenticity extends to enduring punishing rock climbs, treacherous rapids, and confrontations with a psychotic antagonist, all set against the rugged Australian landscape.

Reviews have highlighted the film’s gripping pace and visceral intensity, noting its 95-minute runtime and its success as a streaming original that functions as a full theatrical experience. Critics have pointed to Theron’s physicality as a central strength, emphasizing how her commitment to performing stunts enhances the realism and emotional weight of Sasha’s struggle for survival.

Anyone who has seen Charlize Theron kick butts onscreen knows she has the tough athleticism to handle herself in the most punishing action roles.

Hollywood Reporter

Theron has spoken candidly about the toll and reward of the shoot, stating that each day on set involved something “totally insane in the best way possible.” She described the experience not as isolated moments of extremity but as a sustained physical and mental challenge that matched her character’s journey through grief, and danger.

The production filmed on location in Australia, utilizing real natural environments such as Ginninderra Falls and Glenbrook Gorge to heighten the authenticity of the survival narrative. Theron’s performance required her to navigate these terrains under conditions that tested her endurance, with safety measures relying heavily on her own strength and preparation.

“Apex” is currently streaming on Netflix, where it has been categorized as a bracingly nasty action-thriller that combines natural hazards with human menace. The film underscores Theron’s continued willingness to push physical boundaries in service of character and story, reinforcing her status as one of Hollywood’s most committed performers in the action genre.
