Key findings from the study include:
- Individuals who frequently close their activity rings are 48% less likely to experience sleep quality deterioration compared to those who rarely do.
- These individuals also exhibit a 73% lower probability of experiencing a rising heart rate, a key indicator of cardiovascular health.
- Moreover, those who regularly fill their activity rings show a 57% reduction in perceived stress levels, as measured by the Perceived Stress Scale-4 (PSS-4).
The Apple Heart and Movement Study is a collaborative effort involving Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the American Heart Association (AHA), and Apple, with over 200,000 participants across the United states.3

Health data within the Health app is encrypted and protected when iPhones and iPads are locked. Data synchronized with iCloud is also encrypted. With the latest versions of watchOS, iOS, and iPadOS, supporting double authentication and password protection, health and activity data is stored in a way that is unreadable even by Apple.4
- Limited edition items are available with watchOS 5.0 or later.
- analysis compares individuals who completed all three activity rings with those who completed less than 10% during the same period. Low sleep quality is defined as sleep efficiency [total sleep time/(total sleep time+wake after sleep onset)] less than 87.5%. Heightened stress is defined as a PSS-4 score of 4 or higher.
