Lebanese government leaders are calling on the United States to exert pressure on Israel to halt ceasefire violations as delegations from Beirut and Tel Aviv prepare for unprecedented direct negotiations in Washington.

On May 11, 2026, the United States Ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, conducted a series of separate meetings with the three primary poles of Lebanese power: President Joseph Aoun, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berry and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.

These diplomatic engagements occur just days before the first direct government-level negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in decades, which are being held under American sponsorship in Washington.

During these discussions, the executive leadership of Lebanon emphasized the urgent need for the U.S. To pressure Israel so that it puts an end to the violations of the ceasefire, according to communications shared on X by the Lebanese presidency and the Grand Sérail.

The meetings highlighted significant concerns regarding the physical and economic stability of South Lebanon. President Joseph Aoun specifically called for a termination of the explosive destructions and demolitions of houses carried out by the Israeli army in the southern region.

According to President Aoun, the Israeli military has not hidden its objective to establish a buffer zone in South Lebanon with a depth of 8 to 10 kilometers.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam focused his remarks on the broader objective of achieving a consolidation of the ceasefire to ensure regional stability.

While the executive branch seeks to solidify the current truce, other political factions remain hesitant about the format of the upcoming talks. Speaker Nabih Berry has requested that negotiations with Israel remain indirect, a position that aligns with the stance of Hezbollah.

The scheduled tripartite meeting between Lebanese, American, and Israeli representatives this week in Washington follows a period of preliminary diplomatic activity. In April 2026, two preparatory meetings were held between the respective ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel in Washington.

Earlier reporting on April 15, 2026, indicated that constructive talks had begun under the aegis of the United States, involving Ambassador Michel Issa and the director of political planning.

The outcome of these negotiations is viewed as critical for the cessation of infrastructure destruction in the south and the prevention of a permanent Israeli buffer zone, both of which would have long-term implications for land ownership and economic activity in the border regions.
