Free Software foundation Celebrates LibreLocal Month with Global Meetups

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) marked its 40th anniversary with LibreLocal month in May, a series of global meetups championing free software. Almost 30 LibreLocal events took place, fostering connections within the international free software community.
From the Canary Islands to Canada, these gatherings highlighted the importance of software freedom and collective action. The LibreLocal month initiative connected individuals locally and globally, reinforcing the power of community collaboration.
In the Canary Islands,Spain,Lucio Albenga organized a librecan meetup where attendees discussed the nuances between “open” and “free” software,alternative kernels like GNU Hurd,GNU licenses,and freedom-respecting hardware. One attendee,Un teclado,enjoyed the stimulating conversations.



Le Blanc, France, hosted a GNU/Linux Presentation Day, showcasing programs like Inkscape and OpenStreetMaps. Volunteers from Atelier “Linux au Blanc” assisted with GNU/Linux installations. The event’s success prompted organizers to plan another for later in the year.


In Livermore, California, FSF volunteer Joe organized a meetup at the public library. Attendees explored GNU/Linux, played free games like SuperTuxKart, and experimented with inkscape. Following the event, the Livermore Valley Chamber of Commerce requested assistance migrating a Windows 10 system to GNU/Linux.


Narcisse Mbunzama led the Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, meetup, featuring discussions, knowledge sharing, and a hackathon focused on free software. Participants resolved to organize future events to promote free software adoption.


Benson Muite taught attendees at the Nairobi, Kenya, LibreLocal meetup how to create puff embroidery designs using Inkscape-based Ink/Stitch.One participant embroidered a GNU Guix logo on a cap.


Toronto, Canada, hosted a special Tech Pizza Mondays event celebrating the FSF’s anniversary with demos, discussions, and pizza.
