A1 Highway Repair: 8 Firms Bid on 0M+ Modernization Project

A1 Highway Repair: 8 Firms Bid on $700M+ Modernization Project

February 26, 2026 Victoria Sterling -Business Editor Business

Remediation work is underway on a key stretch of Poland’s A1 motorway, addressing significant road surface deterioration that has plagued the route. Eight firms submitted bids for the first phase of repairs, focusing on a 3-kilometer section near Siemianowice Śląskie, and Dobieszowice. The project, part of a larger, over 700 million złoty (approximately $170 million USD as of February 26, 2026) modernization program, aims to restore the highway to a condition ensuring durability for at least 30 years.

The lowest bid, submitted by a consortium of COLAS Polska and ANTEX II, totaled 36,371,821.74 złoty. Trakcja, the highest bidder, proposed a cost of 59,313,817.89 złoty. All proposals fell within the allocated budget of over 63 million złoty, indicating a competitive bidding process.

The current phase of work encompasses comprehensive repair of the roadbed between approximately 150 meters past the Kościuszki Street overpass in Siemianowice Śląskie and the MOP Dobieszowice Zachód service area. This initial segment represents the first step in a broader effort to modernize the A1 motorway between Pyrzowice and Piekary Śląskie.

The scope of the repairs extends beyond simply resurfacing. The project includes improvements to drainage systems, with the rebuilding of stormwater drainage to prevent future damage and maintain road integrity. Existing noise barriers will also be renovated to ensure continued sound mitigation for nearby communities. Two engineering structures – a motorway overpass and a bridge over the A1, along with their access roads – are slated for refurbishment. Work will include repairs to a culvert and upgrades to road signage, markings, and safety devices.

The need for this extensive repair program stems from issues related to the materials used during the original construction of the A1. According to officials, swelling of one of the materials contributed to the road’s deterioration. The current project aims to fully eliminate these deformations and restore the motorway’s load-bearing capacity and smoothness.

Following the completion of this initial segment, further repair work is planned for other sections of the A1 motorway. The entire program is underpinned by a scientific assessment, a repair plan, and detailed project documentation. The design work, valued at nearly 10 million złoty, was undertaken by Trakt from Katowice in collaboration with the Silesian University of Technology.

The A1 motorway is a critical transportation artery in Poland, connecting the north and south of the country. The deterioration of the road surface has been a growing concern, impacting traffic flow and safety. This comprehensive repair program represents a significant investment in Poland’s infrastructure and is intended to address these issues proactively.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) emphasizes that the goal is not merely to patch the existing problems but to ensure the long-term durability of the A1 motorway. The extensive scope of the work, encompassing drainage, structures, and safety features, reflects this commitment to a lasting solution.
