A24 Leads in LGBTQ Film Representation, Says GLAAD Report

Updated June 11, 2025

As Pride Month ⁢celebrations ⁢continue, GLAAD’s newest Studio Responsibility Index (SRI) reveals that independent studio A24 is setting a high standard for LGBTQ film representation. The annual study assesses the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBTQ characters in films released by major studios.

A24 was the‍ only studio to recieve a “Good” rating in GLAAD’s 2025 report. The studio released 16 films in 2024, with ⁢nine deemed LGBTQ-inclusive. Standout titles included “Love Lies bleeding,” “queer,” “Problemista,” and “I Saw the TV Glow.” A24’s success with these films contributed to the company exceeding $200 million at the domestic box office for the first time.

Amazon followed A24,⁣ with eight of its 25 films released in 2024 featuring ‍LGBTQ inclusion, such as⁣ “My Old Ass,” starring Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza.

The ⁣GLAAD Studio Responsibility Index examined films released from January‍ 1 to December 31, 2024, across 10 top studio ⁢distributors, including A24, Amazon, Apple TV+, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal,⁢ Netflix, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures entertainment, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery.

While A24 demonstrated strong LGBTQ representation, the overall percentage of LGBTQ⁤ characters in films decreased from 27.3% in 2023 to 23.6% in 2024. The ‍report also highlighted that many notable films were mid-budget productions, with budgets ranging from $15 million to $90 million.

The report indicated ⁢gender parity among LGBTQ characters for the first time in five years, with 50% being women, 48% men, and 2% nonbinary. However, transgender representation remains a concern, with only two films featuring transgender characters,‍ representing less than ⁢1% of the 250 films tracked.

“This year’s findings are a wake-up call to the industry,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.”At a time when LGBTQ people are facing unprecedented attacks in politics and news ⁣media, film must be a space for visibility and truth.”

Nick Adams, the vice president of GLAAD Media institute, added, “It is frustrating and alarming to see the⁢ continued near invisibility of transgender characters in films from major studio distributors… At a time when transgender people ⁢are under attack on⁣ many fronts,⁢ both the lack of representation and offensive caricatures of trans people cause real harm.”

GLAAD’s Megan Townsend noted the LGBTQ community’s ⁤notable buying power and cultural influence, emphasizing that authentic LGBTQ representation can drive success ⁤for films.

What’s next

GLAAD urges studios to‍ prioritize authentic LGBTQ storytelling and increase transgender representation in⁣ upcoming films. The organization highlights the importance of diverse and ‍inclusive narratives in reflecting society and countering negative stereotypes.
