AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal Declares No Alliance with Congress for 2025 Delhi Elections
AAP Rules Out Alliance with Congress for 2025 Delhi Assembly Elections
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal announced that AAP will not form an alliance with Congress for the upcoming 2025 Assembly Elections in Delhi. This decision impacts the opposition coalition, known as the INDIA bloc, which aims to challenge the BJP at the national level.
Kejriwal confirmed, “There will be no alliance in Delhi,” during a press conference. This move follows AAP’s recent independent campaign in the Haryana Assembly elections, where it also chose to distance itself from the INDIA bloc after unsuccessful seat-sharing talks with Congress.
Kejriwal’s decision comes after a poor performance by the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra, a coalition that includes Congress, further complicating the dynamics of opposition unity.
Past Collaborations and Current Stance
Earlier this year, AAP and Congress teamed up for the Lok Sabha Elections in Delhi. Both parties campaigned for each other but did not win any seats, as BJP clinched all seven parliamentary constituencies in the city. While AAP contested four seats and Congress three, their collaboration did not yield success.
In contrast, AAP opted to contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab independently, where it has a strong presence and previously won 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, displacing Congress.
BJP’s Response
Following Kejriwal’s announcement, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the lack of unity within the opposition. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla pointed out the contradiction in AAP and Congress’s relationship, highlighting the shifting dynamics. Poonawalla stated, “In the Lok Sabha Elections, their relation was ‘Hum sath sath hain’ (we are together). Today, that relation has changed to ‘Hum aapke hain kaun’ (who am I to you?).”
The BJP’s comments emphasize the confusion within the opposition alliance regarding their goals and vision as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
