Fried’s Emergence Eases Cole’s Absence for yankees
NEW YORK – Aaron Judge acknowledges the irreplaceable nature of Gerrit Cole to the New York Yankees. however, the outfielder also expressed confidence in newly acquired Max Fried’s ability to mitigate the impact of Cole’s absence.
Fried delivered a dominant performance last Wednesday, pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out 11 Detroit Tigers batters without issuing a walk. The Tigers’ offense, previously potent in the series, was stifled by the left-hander.
Despite the Yankees losing the series, Judge voiced optimism about Fried potentially stepping into the role of the team’s ace while Cole is sidelined.
“gerrit Cole is unique,” Judge stated. “everyone knows what he means to us. But with a guy like Fried, who was an ace for the Braves for so long, stepping into our rotation and filling that hole, he’s been amazing. We want quality starts every night, and he’s another jewel.”
The Yankees signed Fried to an eight-year, $220 million contract. While the team initially didn’t anticipate needing him to fill Cole’s shoes so soon, with Cole potentially out untill 2026 due to Tommy John surgery, Fried’s acquisition now appears prescient. Fried brings veteran leadership, having served as Atlanta’s ace for several seasons.
Manager Aaron Boone echoed Judge’s enthusiasm, praising Fried’s performance.
“A huge performance to rescue a victory in this series. It was the catalyst,” Boone said. “What I like is that he loves competition. He enjoys that possibility a lot. When you are really good, like him, there is a reason for it, but he likes to be in full action. He likes to compete. He has many ways to beat you, and it is an outstanding performance.”
With Cole sidelined, Fried has an opportunity to not only lead the Yankees’ rotation but also establish himself as a premier pitcher in the league.
Prior to the season, both Fried and Cole boasted impressive effectiveness records. According to statistics, they were among the top pitchers in baseball in terms of effectiveness as 2019.
However, Yankees fans hoping to see Fried and Cole at the top of the rotation will have to wait until at least 2026, assuming cole’s recovery progresses as expected.
