Aaron Judge Wins AL MVP Again
Aaron Judge was awarded the American League MVP for the second consecutive year. The Baseball Writers Association of America announced that Judge was the unanimous choice as the top player. Bobby Witt Jr. of the Royals was the unanimous runner-up, receiving all second-place votes. Juan Soto, Judge’s teammate, finished third.
Judge had a standout season in 2023, with 58 home runs and impressive performance metrics. His strikeout rate improved to 24.3%, and his walk rate increased to 18.9%. Judge recorded 10 steals and achieved 144 runs batted in, a gain of 13 from the previous year.
Overall, Judge ended the season with a .322 batting average, .458 on-base percentage, and .701 slugging percentage. His wRC+ of 218 indicated he performed 118% better than the league average, surpassing his 206 wRC+ from 2022.
Bobby Witt Jr. also had an excellent season, leading MLB with a .332 batting average and 211 hits. He posted a .332/.389/.588 slash line with 32 home runs and 31 steals. Witt’s performance earned him over 10 WAR and helped the Royals secure an extra first-round draft pick for his top-three MVP finish.
Juan Soto had a strong year, hitting 41 home runs with a .288 batting average and a .419 on-base percentage. This marked his third top-five MVP finish.
The voting results also included Gunnar Henderson and José Ramírez, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Other players that appeared on at least one ballot included Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Tarik Skubal, Jarren Duran, and Yordan Alvarez.
