ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus Pioneers AI-Assisted Musical

⁢ Updated June 04, 2025

Björn Ulvaeus, the Swedish songwriter and ABBA member, is venturing into new territory by creating a musical with the help‌ of artificial intelligence. Ulvaeus revealed at‌ SXSW London that he ‌is “three-quarters” through the project, marking his latest exploration of musical innovation. This follows the success of ABBA’s avatar show, “Voyage.”

Ulvaeus views AI as a valuable tool, not a creative obstacle. He finds it particularly helpful for ⁤overcoming creative blocks. He also works with the‌ International Confederation of Songwriters and Composers (CISAC).

According to Ulvaeus, AI is not yet capable of writing an entire song or crafting lyrics independently. However, he finds ⁢it useful for generating new ideas and directions when he feels⁤ stuck. He emphasized the importance ⁤of compensating artists whose work is used to train AI models, drawing a parallel to streaming royalties.

Ulvaeus’s embrace of technology extends back to his ⁢ABBA days. He and bandmate Benny Andersson⁤ actively sought out the latest‌ equipment for⁤ thier ‍studio.⁣ This included the⁤ frist Mini Moog synthesizer and digital recording machines.

The AI musical project is part of Ulvaeus’s work‍ with Pophouse Entertainment. The company aims to ⁣reimagine musical legacies through technology. Pophouse acquires catalogs of legendary artists.

“It’s fantastic. It is indeed such a great tool,” Ulvaeus said of ⁤AI. “It is indeed ‌like having another songwriter in the room‌ with a⁢ huge reference frame. It is really⁤ an‌ extension⁢ of your mind. You have access to things⁢ that you didn’t think of before.”

Ulvaeus’s career has consistently involved storytelling through music. From⁢ ABBA’s narrative-driven hits to the musical “Mamma Mia!,” he has⁤ always incorporated stories into his compositions.

Ulvaeus said that he always wanted to tell a⁣ story in his ‍songs. He‌ explained that this⁣ drive, combined with his interest in ⁣technology, places him at the forefront of the AI revolution in music.

What’s next

Ulvaeus plans to continue exploring the possibilities of AI in music. He also intends to advocate for artists’ rights in the digital landscape.
