The trial of Tetsuya yamagami, the man accused of the 2022 assassination of former prime Minister Shinzo Abe, is scheduled to begin Oct.28, according to local media reports.Yamagami is charged with murder and violations of arms control laws.
Yamagami, 44, allegedly targeted Abe becuase of the politician’s links to the Unification Church.Yamagami reportedly held a grudge against the group, also known as “Moonies,” because his mother’s large donations to the church bankrupted his family. The incident, wich occurred while Abe was campaigning in Nara, Japan, shocked the world.
An earlier postponement occurred after a suspicious, but ultimately harmless, item caused a court evacuation.
Yamagami reportedly does not plan to contest the murder charge.
