Tammy Abraham’s clinical hat-trick powered Besiktas to a 4-1 victory over St Patrick’s Athletic in their 2025 Conference League clash. Despite a spirited second-half display from teh Irish side, including a well-taken goal from Simon power, the damage was done in a one-sided first half at Richmond Park.
First-Half Dominance for Besiktas
Besiktas wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead in the 12th minute. Anang, diving forward, got a hand to it, only for the ball to drop to Abraham, who tapped home after it bounced kindly off his chest. The Turkish side doubled their advantage shortly after, with Abraham grabbing his second and his side’s third at the midway point of the first half.Showing immense strength in holding off defender Tom Grivosti after a clever flick-on from Joao Mario, Abraham calmly dinked the ball over the advancing Anang, silencing the St Pat’s support. Besiktas continued to press, nearly adding a fourth on the half-hour mark. A delightful one-touch build-up culminated in a fierce shot from Orkun Kokcu that fizzed narrowly over the St Pat’s crossbar.
St Pat’s did manage to create a fleeting moment of hope, forcing a corner in the 37th minute. Though, any potential celebration was short-lived as the referee blew for a foul by Simon Power before the ball could find the net.
The situation worsened for St Pat’s just before the break. Jamie Lennon brought down Abraham in the area, and the Englishman confidently dispatched the resulting penalty, sending Anang the wrong way to complete his hat-trick and extend Besiktas’ lead to 4-0.
Second-Half Fightback, But Too Little, Too Late
Despite the daunting scoreline, st Pat’s emerged for the second half with renewed determination. Just three minutes after the restart, they pulled a goal back through Simon Power. A beautifully weighted left-footed ball from Jason McClelland found Power, who advanced on goal and coolly slotted the ball past Mert Gunok at his near post.
A lengthy VAR check confirmed the goal, sparking jubilant celebrations amongst the St Pat’s supporters. The goal injected a much-needed boost of energy into the home side. St Pat’s should have had a second soon after, as Axel Sjoberg, introduced at half-time, brilliantly picked out Mason Melia in the area. However, with the goal at his mercy, Melia’s shot was straight at Gunok.
Chris Forrester then tested Gunok with a shot on 75 minutes as Pats continued to search for a consolation goal. At the other end, Anang proved his worth, denying Besiktas a fifth, making two crucial saves from substitute Kartal Yilmaz in the closing stages.
St Pat’s showed commendable resilience in the second half, but the damage inflicted in the opening period proved insurmountable. They were, as the saying goes, rabbits caught in headlights during the first 45 minutes.
