The public healthcare system in Abruzzo, Italy, is enhancing accessibility through mobile technology. the Abruzzo Health Online app now allows citizens to directly access medical reports and associated diagnostic images on their smartphones, eliminating the need to physically visit healthcare facilities for retrieval. This initiative represents a meaningful step towards a more digitized and patient-centric healthcare experience.

According to Health Councilor Nicoletta Verì, this transformation represents a deliberate shift in focus, addressing a previous lack of investment in technological innovation within the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
Initial steps in this digitization process included enabling online appointment scheduling, managing general practitioner selections, and issuing duplicate health cards. The introduction of mobile diagnostic image access follows months of advancement by regional IT teams and will provide access to health information outside of the traditional Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
Telemedicine Expansion and VNA Implementation
User response to the app has been positive, with approximately 500,000 accesses recorded – representing nearly half of the Abruzzo population.This high adoption rate demonstrates a clear demand for convenient digital healthcare solutions.
Riccardo Urbani, technical consultant to President Marsilio, highlighted the crucial role of the Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) system. The VNA allows Abruzzo to become the frist Italian region offering universal access to reports and diagnostic images from any healthcare facility. This interoperability is a significant advancement in patient data management.
Furthermore, a significant telemedicine project is underway, designed to improve remote assistance for patients with mobility limitations. This expansion of telemedicine services will further enhance access to care for vulnerable populations.
