Abu Dhabi has announced its comprehensive 2050 energy strategy,seeking to draw AED400 billion ($109 billion) in foreign direct investment into its energy sector. The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) revealed the framework at the 2025 World Utilities Congress held at ADNEC Abu Dhabi Center.
The proclamation highlights Abu Dhabi’s rapid economic expansion, with its GDP exceeding AED1 trillion ($272.2 billion), marking it as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. The energy and water sector is playing a crucial role in supporting this growth.
The strategic framework rests on four key objectives: ensuring a secure and sustainable energy supply, maximizing efficiency in both supply and demand, supporting decarbonization thru economically sound methods, and maximizing the economic value of energy and water resources.The plan to boost sustainable energy also aims to increase local content in key supply chains to 65 percent and achieve 100 percent Emiratization in critical sector jobs.
Dr. Abdulla Humaid Al Jarwan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, said the strategy is a roadmap for transforming the energy and water sector into a global model of efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. He added that it aligns with the leadership’s vision to build a diversified, net-zero economy by 2050.
“This strategic framework represents a comprehensive roadmap for the future of the energy and water sector in the Emirate. It is built upon an enterprising vision aimed at transforming the sector into a global model of efficiency, innovation, and sustainability, in line with our wise leadership’s aspirations to build a diversified, net-zero economy by 2050,” Al Jarwan said.
