Abu Dhabi is poised to host the inaugural Open Masters Games from February 6 to February 15, today marking a significant moment for the region as it prepares to welcome over 25,000 athletes from 92 nationalities. The event, described as the largest multi-sport event ever staged in the Middle East, will see competitions unfold across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra.

The Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026 represents a new evolution of the traditional World Masters Games model, prioritizing inclusivity and removing qualification barriers to participation. This approach aims to open the Games to athletes of all abilities and backgrounds, fostering a spirit of lifelong participation in sport. Backed by the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Games are establishing a new global benchmark for inclusive sporting events.

The program boasts a diverse range of 38 sports, including six traditional Emirati sports, adding a unique cultural dimension to the competition. Notably, 13 sports will be specifically tailored for People of Determination, further emphasizing the Games’ commitment to inclusivity. Competitions will be held across 18 indoor and 20 outdoor world-class facilities, supported by a dedicated team of 7,200 volunteers and over 30 local and international partners.

Organizers anticipate over 500,000 spectators will attend the Games, highlighting the event’s potential to boost tourism and showcase Abu Dhabi’s capabilities as a host city for major global sporting events. The event is held under the patronage of Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, demonstrating high-level support for the initiative.

Several sports have already confirmed significant participation numbers. 182 athletes are set to compete in weightlifting, and 200 will participate in Judo competitions. The “Al Ain for Chess” club will also be represented at the Games. Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Canoe Kayak, Cycling, Football, Golf, Orienteering, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, and Volleyball are among the confirmed sports on the program, alongside Bowling, Cricket, Horse Jumping, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Netball, Obstacle Race, Padel, Rugby, Sailing, and Wrestling. Traditional Emirati sports like Camel Race, Al Tabba, and Endurance Horse Race, as well as Falconry, will also feature prominently.

The Games will officially open on February 6 with a grand opening ceremony at Zayed Sports City. The main competition program will then run from February 7 to February 14, culminating in closing activities on February 15. A Welcome Ceremony is scheduled for February 6, promising a spectacular event featuring global superstars.

Dr. Ahmad Al Falasi, the UAE Minister of Sports, has emphasized the Games’ alignment with the nation’s vision for quality of life, sustainable health, and social cohesion. He views the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026 as a reflection of the country’s commitment to fostering active lifestyles and recognizing that athletic achievement has no age limit.

The Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026 is not simply about competition; it’s about creating a platform for cultural exchange and community celebration. As one athlete commented, “The best combination of sport and travel!” and another noted, “Learning a new sport is exciting!” These sentiments underscore the Games’ broader appeal, attracting participants who value both athletic challenge and the opportunity to explore new places and connect with like-minded individuals from around the world.

Abu Dhabi’s successful bid to host the Games underscores its growing reputation as a global hub for international sport, having demonstrated a proven capacity to deliver major events while integrating culture, community, and quality of life into the overall experience. The event is expected to further solidify the UAE’s position on the international sporting map for decades to come.
