Hundreds of thousands of residents across the Delaware Valley can begin shopping for health insurance on Nov. 1 through state-based exchanges and federal platforms, WHYY reported.
Annual Marketplaces Open Nov. 1
Coverage purchased during this period takes effect on New Year’s Day or in early 2027, according to regional reporting. Shoppers in Pennsylvania will use the state-based exchange Pennie, while residents in New Jersey will use Get Covered NJ and those in Delaware will utilize HealthCare.gov.
Higher Premium Costs Prompt Protection Urgency
Insurance carriers raised premium rates throughout the region, meaning consumers will likely encounter more expensive options this year. Even with rising costs, state insurance leaders are urging residents to secure coverage to guard against unexpected medical expenses. “Financially, having coverage protects you from high medical costs and medical debt in the event of an accident or illness,” said Devon Trolley, executive director of Pennie, during an Oct. 22, 2026, announcement at Valley Fruits and Veggies farm in Bath, Pennsylvania. Trolley also noted that coverage allows individuals to stay healthy enough to work and continue providing for themselves and their families.
Eligibility Rules and Qualifying Life Events
Open enrollment is the only time of year when people can review and make changes to their coverage outside of qualifying life events. Qualifying events that permit changes outside the November window include losing a job or employer-sponsored coverage, moving, getting married or divorced, having a child, and a change in immigration status. Marketplace plans cover hospitalizations, prescription drugs, primary care, specialty services, maternity care, mental health, and preexisting conditions. Plans must include dental and vision coverage for children, and adults can purchase stand-alone dental and vision plans if their selected package does not include them.
