Early Life and Musical Influences
Born on April 27, 1951, in the Bronx, New York, Frehley was largely self-taught on the guitar, drawing inspiration from rock legends like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. He honed his skills listening to records and developing a unique playing style that would become a hallmark of KISS’s sound.
Frehley spoke candidly about the challenges he faced growing up. In a 1996 interview with SPIN, he reflected on the losses he experienced: “Half of my friends are dead now or OD’d. My best friend hung himself at Rikers Island. It was a rocky road – but music got me away from those people.”
Joining KISS and Rise to Fame
In late 1972, Frehley answered an advertisement in the Village Voice and joined the band that would become KISS. Alongside vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley, vocalist/bassist Gene Simmons, and drummer Peter Criss, he helped transform the group into one of the most accomplished and visually striking rock acts of the 1970s.
