Acetaminophen Liver Damage Older Adults
Approximately 75% of older adults experience chronic pain, and an 2025 survey by the Health in Hand Foundation found 86% of Americans report exceeding the maximum daily dose of acetaminophen. While 81% reported this in 2010, the number rose to 89% in 2022 before slightly decreasing. The maximum daily dose is generally 4000 mg, but can vary. A study of over 580,000 patients linked acetaminophen to increased risk of perforation, ulceration, bleeding, heart failure, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease.
experts agree that less acetaminophen is better, and “double dipping”-taking both OTC and prescription acetaminophen-is a concern, especially in older adults who may have cognitive or visual impairments.Misuse of OTC medication was demonstrated in 80% of 288 older adults studied across 20 pharmacies. Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal issues and, with overuse, liver damage. Pharmacists are eager to help patients select appropriate OTC medications.
