Vegan Diet Plays Key Role in Reducing Acid Load, Promoting Weight Loss

A recent study reveals that a low-fat vegan diet significantly decreases dietary acid load compared to a Mediterranean diet.This reduction is linked to weight loss, according to findings published in Frontiers in Nutrition.
The research, conducted by the Physicians commitee for Responsible Medicine, suggests that cutting out meat, eggs, and dairy can play a key role in reducing inflammation and promoting a healthier weight. The study involved 62 overweight adults who followed either a vegan or Mediterranean diet for 16 weeks, with a break in between.
Researchers tracked participants’ dietary acid load using Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL) and Net Endogenous Acid Production (NEAP) scores. Higher scores indicate a greater acid load. Results showed a significant decrease in both PRAL and NEAP scores on the vegan diet, while the Mediterranean diet showed no significant change.
