Actor Behind Leather Mask in ‘Crime’ Dies

March 8, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Peter Greene, the prolific character actor known for his menacing portrayals in films like Pulp Fiction and The Mask, has died. He was 66 years old. Greene passed away on December 12, 2025, in Manhattan, New York, from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to reports.

Born Peter Green on May 10, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Greene carved out a career playing villains, corrupt law enforcement officials, and generally unsettling characters. While often not a leading man, his presence in a film was reliably memorable. He began acting in 1990, steadily building a resume with smaller roles before breaking through in the mid-1990s.

Greene’s most recognizable roles came in quick succession. He played Zed, a particularly disturbing antagonist in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994), a performance that remains chilling for many viewers. The same year, he appeared in Clean, Shaven. He followed that with the role of Dorian Tyrell in The Mask (1994), opposite Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz, showcasing a different, more flamboyant brand of villainy. He also featured in The Usual Suspects (1995), further solidifying his reputation as a go-to actor for complex, often morally ambiguous roles.

His work didn’t stop there. Greene continued to amass an impressive list of credits, appearing in films like Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995), Kiss & Tell (1997), Blue Streak (1999), and Training Day (2001). He transitioned seamlessly between film and television, with appearances in The Black Donnellys (2007), Life on Mars (2009), New York New York (2016), and, more recently, The Continental (2023). Throughout his career, he accumulated over a hundred film and television credits.

Greene’s early life was marked by instability. He ran away from home at the age of 15 and experienced homelessness for several years before discovering his passion for acting in his mid-20s. He then studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York City, immersing himself in method acting. This training undoubtedly informed his ability to inhabit such convincingly unsettling characters.

Despite his success, Greene struggled with drug addiction throughout his life. This personal battle, while often kept private, adds a layer of complexity to his story and underscores the challenges faced by many in the entertainment industry. The circumstances surrounding his death, ruled an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound, are a tragic end to a career that spanned over three decades.

Greene’s talent lay in his ability to disappear into a role. He wasn’t a star who relied on charisma or leading-man looks; he was a craftsman who brought a palpable sense of menace and authenticity to every character he played. He excelled at portraying the kind of individuals who lurked in the shadows, making audiences uncomfortable and questioning their own perceptions of good and evil.

His passing has prompted an outpouring of reactions from colleagues and fans alike, many remembering him as a dedicated professional and a uniquely gifted performer. While he may not have always received the widespread recognition afforded to some of his contemporaries, Peter Greene’s contributions to cinema and television are undeniable. He leaves behind a legacy of compelling performances that will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.

He is survived by one child.
