A final farewell was held today for Belgian actress Émilie dequenne,‍ who died March 16 ⁢at the age of‍ 43 ‍after battling a⁤ rare form of cancer. The funeral took place at ‍3:30 p.m. at⁢ the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

in lieu⁤ of flowers, Dequenne’s family requested donations ‍be made to cancer research.

“We prefer donations to the Gustave Roussy Institute to help advance research ‍on corticosurrenaloma,” her relatives said. The Gustave Roussy Institute is a leading ‍cancer center in‍ France,were she⁤ received palliative care.

A donation page has been established on the Gustave Roussy Institute’s website ⁢by the actress’s family. They noted that she dreamed of⁤ a world where treatments would be more effective.

Battling an Aggressive Cancer

Dequenne rose to prominence⁢ at age‍ 18 in the dardenne⁢ brothers’ film Rosetta, for which she won the interpretation prize at Cannes.⁢ She went on to star in ⁣approximately 50 films,including Brotherhood⁣ of the Wolf,RER’s Daughter,Our Children,and Love Affair(s).

In October 2023, Dequenne ⁢announced she had been diagnosed with corticosurrenaloma, a rare cancer of the adrenal cortex. The diagnosis forced her to step away from acting.

After a period of⁢ remission, Dequenne shared in december that‍ she was fighting an ⁢increasingly aggressive form of the disease, which would shorten her life expectancy. ⁢She resumed chemotherapy soon after. She spent her final days in palliative care at Gustave Roussy Hospital.

Tributes from the Film World

The ⁤news of⁣ Dequenne’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from the film industry, including from the ‍Dardenne brothers.

Luc Dardenne reflected on working with‍ Dequenne on Rosetta. It was a great pleasure to work with her, and ‍we immediately understood that it would be she ⁣who would be Rosetta, he said.

The first day of shooting, the whole⁢ team was captured by them. There was a very large unit ⁤around her. She made the film believe, she made⁢ Rosetta believe, ‍the filmmaker added.
