Dever was provided with additional security, a measure deemed necessary given the intensity of some online reactions.Fellow cast member Isabel Merced, who plays dina in season 2, commented on the situation, stating, “There are so many strange people in this world, because there are people who realy hate Abby, who is not a real person. Just a reminder: not a real person.”
In a recent interview, Dever addressed the pressure of meeting fan expectations for her portrayal of Abby in The Last of Us series.
“well, it’s hard not to see those things on the internet,” she admitted.
Dever elaborated on her approach to the role: “It’s hard not to stop myself from looking every once in a while, especially going into this, of course. And I want to do this character justice and make the fans proud by bringing her to life in this way.”
She emphasized her focus on collaboration and character depth: “But my main focus was the collaboration between Neil and Craig [Mazin], and making sure that I was really getting to the core of who she is, what motivates her, and her emotional state; her anger, her frustration, her grief, and all of that. I wanted to make sure that that was what I was focusing most of my energy on.”
Abby’s Physicality in The Last of Us Adaptation
In February 2025, Neil Druckmann revealed that the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 would present a different take on Abby’s physique. The character will not be portrayed as muscular as she appears in the game, as the series does not require the same emphasis on certain gameplay mechanics.
Druckmann and fellow showrunner Craig Mazin explained that Dever’s casting didn’t necessitate a physical change. The focus shifted from mirroring the game’s mechanics to exploring the character’s emotional depth.
druckmann stated, “it would have cost us finding someone as good as Kaitlyn to play this role. In the game, you have to play as both [Ellie and Abby] and we needed them to play differently. We needed Ellie to feel smaller and have a way of moving, and Abby needed to play more like Joel, in the sense that she’s almost like a brute force in the way she can handle certain things physically.”
He further clarified the change in direction: “That doesn’t play as big a role in this version of the story as there’s not as much moment-to-moment violent action. It’s more about the drama. I’m not saying there isn’t action here. It’s just, there are different priorities and a different way of approaching it.”
Mazin added his perspective, highlighting the chance for deeper character exploration: “Personally, I think there’s an amazing opportunity here to explore someone who is perhaps more physically vulnerable then the Abby of the game, but whose spirit is stronger. And the question is,’Where does her formidable nature come from, and how does it manifest?’ That’s something that will be explored now and later.”
The reference to “now and later” suggests HBO’s plans to extend The Last of Us Part 2 beyond a single season. Mazin has previously indicated that Part 2 contains a more expansive narrative, leading to the decision to structure season 2 with a “natural breaking point” after just seven episodes, even though a third season is yet to be confirmed.
