Historical Context
The Moors and Christians festival commemorates the struggles between the Christian kingdoms and the Moorish (Muslim) rulers who controlled much of the Iberian Peninsula for centuries. The reconquista, the centuries-long effort by Christian kingdoms to reclaim the peninsula, culminated in 1492 with the fall of Granada. The festival doesn’t glorify war but rather celebrates the historical interplay of cultures and the eventual Christian victory.
The festival in Valencia, while inspired by the Alcoy tradition, has developed its own unique character over the years, incorporating local customs and artistic expressions.
The Medieval Market
Adding to the October festivities, the Medieval Market will be held in the turia Garden, between the Exhibition Bridge and the Flores bridge. this market offers a glimpse into medieval life, with artisans, craftspeople, and vendors selling traditional goods. It’s a family-kind event that complements the historical re-enactments of the Moors and Christians festival.
