Adani Group to Invest $100B in Renewable Energy-Powered AI Data Centers by 2035

India’s Adani Group announced , a $100 billion investment in renewable-energy-powered data centers designed for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, marking one of the country’s largest private commitments to digital infrastructure. The initiative, slated for completion by , aims to establish a sovereign energy and compute platform to support India’s growing AI ecosystem and is expected to catalyze an additional $150 billion in related investments.

The conglomerate plans to scale the capacity of its data center arm, AdaniConnex, from its current 2 gigawatts (GW) to 5 GW across multiple Indian campuses. This expansion will be underpinned by a significant investment in renewable energy, leveraging the Adani Group’s existing 30 GW Khavda project in Gujarat, of which over 10 GW is already operational. An additional $55 billion has been allocated for expanding the group’s renewable energy portfolio, including large-scale battery storage systems.

The investment reflects a broader global trend of increasing demand for data center capacity driven by the rapid development and deployment of AI technologies. However, the Adani Group’s commitment is notable for its integrated approach, linking renewable energy generation, grid resilience, and high-density AI computing infrastructure within a unified architecture. This strategy aims to address both the energy demands and the data sovereignty concerns associated with AI development.

“Nations that integrate energy and computing capacity would define the next phase of technological growth,” said Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group. This statement underscores the company’s ambition to position India as a global leader in the emerging “Intelligence Revolution,” as described in the company’s announcement.

The planned data centers will incorporate advanced liquid cooling technologies, high-efficiency power distribution systems, and dedicated capacity to support large Indian language models and national data initiatives, bolstering data sovereignty. A portion of the GPU capacity will be reserved for Indian AI startups, research institutions, and deep-tech innovators, fostering a domestic AI ecosystem.

Adani Group is already collaborating with major technology firms to develop AI campuses. A gigawatt-scale AI data center campus is planned in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Alphabet’s Google. Additional campuses are under development in Noida, in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). The group is also working with Microsoft on projects in Hyderabad and Pune, in the states of Telangana and Maharashtra, respectively. Discussions are ongoing with other global technology firms to establish further AI campuses.

The $100 billion investment is a direct commitment, with the expectation of attracting an additional $150 billion in investments across server manufacturing, sovereign cloud platforms, advanced electrical systems, and related infrastructure. This could create a total AI infrastructure ecosystem valued at $250 billion in India over the next decade. The scale of the investment signals a significant bet on India’s potential to become a major hub for AI development and deployment.

The announcement comes as governments worldwide are increasingly focused on securing their access to AI infrastructure and ensuring data sovereignty. The Adani Group’s initiative aligns with India’s national priorities in these areas, aiming to create a self-reliant and secure AI ecosystem. The integration of renewable energy sources also addresses growing concerns about the environmental impact of data centers, which are typically energy-intensive operations.

While the project is ambitious, the Adani Group’s track record in infrastructure development and its existing investments in renewable energy and data centers provide a foundation for its successful execution. The company’s ability to secure partnerships with leading technology firms and attract further investment will be crucial to realizing its vision of establishing India as a global AI leader.
