Human biology is characterized by an unprecedented ability to develop adaptations that increase the odds of survival and reproduction across diverse environments. According to evolutionary anthropologist Herman Pontzer, a professor of evolutionary anthropology and global health at Duke University, this adaptability has allowed Homo sapiens to become the most geographically diverse of all primate species, maintaining permanent populations on every continent except Antarctica.

In the 2025 book Adaptable: How Your Unique Body Really Works and Why Our Biology Unites Us, published by Penguin Random House, Pontzer examines the science of human diversity and the biological solutions that arise from sustained environmental pressures.

Highly localized biological adaptations occur when specific environmental pressures drive the need for new physiological solutions. One prominent example is found in populations living at high altitudes, such as those in the Himalayas, who have developed specific traits to survive in low-oxygen environments.

Early humans faced constant challenges to their survival, including susceptibility to predators, injury, and disease. The boundary between extinction and thriving was often determined by the capacity of a generation to adjust to shifting climate patterns, specifically the oscillations between rainy and arid periods, as well as glacial and warm eras.

The Modern Biological Mismatch

While humans evolved to be highly adaptable, recent analysis suggests that the pace of modern industrialization has outstripped the speed of biological adaptation. In a report dated December 8, 2025, evolutionary anthropologists Colin Shaw of the University of Zurich and Daniel Longman of Loughborough University argue that there is a fundamental mismatch between nature-shaped physiology and industrialized environments.

For hundreds of thousands of years, human biology evolved to meet the psychological and physical demands of hunter-gatherer life. This ancestral lifestyle required daily exposure to natural settings, frequent physical movement, and short bursts of intense stress.

Within only a few centuries, industrialization has fundamentally altered these conditions. Modern environments introduce a variety of stressors and biological demands that human evolution did not prepare the species for, including:

  • Long periods of sitting and sedentary behavior
  • Processed foods and artificial lighting
  • Air, noise, and light pollution
  • Exposure to pesticides and microplastics
  • Continuous sensory input

Health Implications of Industrial Environments

The mismatch between evolved biology and modern living is linked to several widespread health concerns. Shaw and Longman’s research indicates that industrial environments overstimulate human stress systems, which can erode both reproduction and general health.

Evidence of this biological toll is seen in the rise of chronic inflammatory diseases and global declines in fertility. The researchers propose that the chronic stress experienced in the modern world stems from the fact that human physiology is designed for acute, short-term stress rather than the constant pressure of industrial life.

To mitigate these effects, the researchers suggest that cultural and environmental redesign—specifically planning focused on nature—is essential to align modern living with human biological needs.
