Adele Song Removed Worldwide Over Plagiarism Claim
Adele Song Pulled From Streaming Services Worldwide Over Plagiarism Claim
Rio de Janeiro – A Brazilian judge has ordered the global removal of Adele’s 2015 hit “Million years Ago” following a plagiarism lawsuit filed by Brazilian musician Toninho Geraes. The ruling, made public on Monday, alleges that Adele’s song infringes on Geraes’ 1990s hit “Mulheres.”
Geraes, whose compositions have been popularized by renowned Brazilian samba singers, claims that “Million Years Ago” bears a striking resemblance to his work. His legal team uploaded a YouTube video comparing the two songs, highlighting the alleged similarities.
“This ruling demonstrates the strength of the Brazilian justice system and its commitment to protecting Brazilian artists from copyright infringement,” said Fredimio Biasotto Trotta, Geraes’ lawyer.
The court order mandates Sony Music Entertainment and Global Music, adele’s record label, to promptly cease all distribution and commercialization of “million Years Ago” on all platforms, including streaming services like Spotify and Deezer. Failure to comply could result in a fine of 50,000 reais (approximately $8,080).
Geraes’ legal team is currently notifying streaming services worldwide to remove the song. As of Wednesday morning, “Million Years Ago” remained accessible on many platforms.
Universal Music has appealed the decision, arguing that any similarities between the two songs are purely coincidental and stem from the use of common musical elements.
Adding another layer to the case, Geraes, who also has a contract with Universal Music, is seeking to terminate his agreement with the company due to the plagiarism allegations. He is demanding over $150,000 in compensation.
“I felt deeply disrespected,” Geraes told Reuters.
Universal Music declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings, while Sony Music did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Geraes became aware of the alleged plagiarism in 2021 when a friend, also a composer, heard “Million Years Ago” at a party and noticed the similarities to “Mulheres.”
